Question
What can we do as far as parental controls with our new windows 7 home edition computer? This is primarily to protect our children from innapropriate internet material. Our child is 13 and all the family members have been given admin rights on the computer.
Answer
My best suggestion(s) are as follows, though not completely free.
- Only give admin rights to those that really need it and will be installing and uninstalling applications. The lack of admin rights will cut down on the possibility for viruses quite a bit as well.
- Purchase and install Covenant Eyes accountability software AND the filtering portion. I highly recommend it and have been personally using the accountability portion for 5+ years.
- This will eliminate the need for setting up any parental controls in the OS (which are easily negated with enough savvy) and is hands down the hardest (impossible in my experience) piece of software to get around.
- Their support is fantastic as well.
- Install Microsoft Security Essentials for your antivirus protection. It is very light-weight, created by Microsoft and free. NOTE: DO NOT install this if you already have an AV program installed. Uninstall the other program(s) FIRST and REBOOT after each installation.
I hope that helps.
